Helgas Garden

The story of Helga's Garden

The area is named after Helga Nielsen, who lived most of her almost 93-year-long life on the property, which was located here in the middle of Frejlev.

Helga was born in Døllefjelde in 1909, came to Frejlev around 1932, where she married Viggo Nielsen, and then lived until her death in 2002.

Her care and thoroughness left her clear traces in the garden, which she diligently looked after throughout her long life.

She harvested fruits, berries and everything that the earth could produce when it was carefully tended.

For example, she sowed radishes between the rows of strawberries so that the soil there would not go to waste.

After Helga's death, the property's new owner was unfortunately unable to continue her work, and in 2017 Guldborgsund Municipality took over the property, demolished all buildings and left the grounds to Frejlev's residents with newly sown grass.

The town's residents have then little by little developed the area with fence, apple trees, a pétanque court, swings, tiny lunchshelter, tables and benches, etc.
